SDSU Beats Irvine, 1-0

The San Diego State men’s soccer team (3-0) had a tougher time than expected with visiting UC Irvine, but pulled off a 1-0 victory at Aztec Bowl Wednesday night. Forward Eric Wynalda scored the game-winner with four minutes left to play.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (2-0-1) defeated host U.S. International University, 3-1. The Gulls (0-2) got their first goal of the season from Darren McCartney with 22:28 remaining.

UC San Diego defeated host Whittier, 2-0, in the season opener for both teams. Eric Dingwall scored the Tritons’ first goal with 11 minutes remaining in the first half. Chris Hanssen scored the final goal six minutes into the second half.

VOLLEYBALL

The University of San Diego (1-4) lost to visiting Utah State (2-0), 17-15, 7-15, 15-9, 15-11. Connie Fullmer led Utah State with 14 kills; Jody Connors had 12 for the Toreros.

USD’s Kim Reynolds will not return to the volleyball team for the 1988-89 school year.

Reynolds, a 5-foot 10-inch forward from Springfield, Ore., made the decision for personal reasons, Torero Coach Kathy Marpe said.
