Local News in Brief : Quarrying Permit’s Revocation Backed

Share

After five months of debate, the Azusa Planning Commission has recommended that the City Council revoke the Azusa Rock Co.’s quarrying permit to mine Fish Canyon.

In April, Azusa city planners concluded that the quarry represented a public nuisance, had violated the original permit’s conditions and should be closed. During public hearings, Azusa Rock officials argued that they have not violated any permit provisions.

The Committee to Save the Foothills, an Azusa citizens’ group, and officials and residents of neighboring Duarte have demanded closure of the quarry, complaining of air and noise pollution and aesthetic damage.

The issue will come before the council in October. Company officials have promised to sue if the permit is revoked.
