Local News in Brief : $625,538 in Olympic Surplus Handed Out

The foundation that hands out the Southern California share of the 1984 Olympic surplus has awarded $625,538 in new grants to youth sports activities for the last quarter of the year.

Largest of the grants announced by the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles were $155,000 to the Ladies Professional Golf Assn. for a teaching program for junior golfers; $153,700 to the Santa Barbara Rowing Foundation for boathouse renovation and $146,700 to the Boys Clubs of America to continue an Olympic sports program.

Other grants included $55,195 to the Personal Involvement Center in South-Central Los Angeles for a gymnasium floor; $40,070 to Field Hockey Federation Inc. to expand a youth program; $22,000 to the Braille Institute in Los Angeles to refurbish its track and add a fitness course; $11,073 to the Community Youth Sports and Art Foundation of South-Central Los Angeles for a portable boxing ring and $11,000 to the Santa Barbara Swim Club for a timing system and scholarship program.

Grants of $5,000 each were given to the Alhambra Thunderbirds Football organization, the Los Angeles city Recreation and Parks Department’s aquatics division, and the Diamond Bar, Lemon Grove, Ontario and Palmdale Little Leagues.
