Two state highway workers who found a bag containing $6,100 on a Cape Cod road say they knew immediately they would return it.

“We looked at each other and started laughing, then turned the truck around and took the bag to the state police at the Bourne rotary,” John Mullan, 46, said of the bag he and his partner, Thomas Lopes, 62, found last week.

“It was hilarious. You read about it in the paper and never think it’s going to happen to you,” Mullan, a 10-year employee of the state Department of Public Works, said.

“We worried about the people who had lost it,” Mullan said of the money, which consisted of stacks of $100 bills placed inside a blue nylon briefcase and left alongside Route 28 in Falmouth.

And, it did not take long for them to find out who owned it.

Harry W. Turner of East Falmouth claimed the bag the next day, saying he was carrying the cash to buy a boat when it “blew out the window” of his car, state Trooper James Mattaliano said.

“He didn’t notice, I guess. He was very happy to get it back,” Mattaliano said.
