An estimated 50,000 supporters of Chile’s political left marched to a rally in Santiago in their first show of force in 15 years. Authorities restricted the march by supporters of a leftist coalition, including the outlawed Communist Party, to a poor neighborhood, far from the city center. In another part of the city, police used tear gas to break up a clash between supporters and opponents of President Augusto Pinochet, the lone candidate in an Oct. 5 plebiscite on granting him eight more years in office.
