College Roundup : UC Irvine Wins Its Volleyball Tournament

UC Irvine won the Anteater Invitational women’s volleyball tournament Saturday, defeating Loyola Marymount, 15-7, 5-15, 15-10, 15-8.

Ann Warmus led Irvine with 38 assists and was named the tournament’s most valuable player. Kris Roberts had 15 kills, 2 blocks and 9 assists for Irvine (3-0).

In other volleyball action:

Chapman 3, Navy 0--Chapman won the U.S. Naval Academy Invitational by defeating the host school, 15-0, 15-6, 15-8. Chapman won three matches Saturday for the title. The Panthers (10-2) defeated New York Tech, 15-6, 15-4, 15-3, and Juniata College, 16-14, 16-18, 15-7, 15-10, before topping Navy. Junior outside hitter Dana Beardsley and sophomore setter Brooke Hayselden were named to the all-tournament team.

In nonconference men’s soccer:

Southern California College 1, CS San Bernardino 0--James Helmuth, junior forward, scored an unassisted goal with about 7 minutes left in the game to give host SCC (1-4) the nonconference victory. Joe Beeler had four saves for San Bernardino. Tim Ramage had five saves for SCC, which plays at Cal State Dominguez Hills Tuesday.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Cal State Chico 5, UC Irvine 0--Tracy Davis scored two goals, both in the second half, to lead host Chico. Lynnette Brinkman had 14 saves for Chico (2-1-1). Janice Taft had 12 saves for Irvine (0-4).

Chapman 2, Westmont 1--Freshman Stasi Dimassis scored one goal and assisted on the other as Chapman took the season opener at Orange. Dimassis got an assist when junior Stephanie Brown put in her centering pass four minutes into the game. Dimassis scored from 10 yards out to give Chapman a 2-0 lead 15 minutes into the second half.
