Cyclist Steve Hegg, a gold and silver medalist in the 1984 Olympics, was disqualified from the 1988 Games because of a positive drug test for caffeine, the United States Cycling Federation announced Saturday.

Hegg, 24, of Dana Point, was to be a member of the four-man pursuit team to compete at Seoul later this month. Hegg earned a silver medal in this event and a gold medal in individual pursuit at the 1984 Games.

The drug test was conducted last month by the U.S. Olympic Committee at the Olympic cycling track trials in Houston.

With Hegg’s disqualification, Carl Sundquist, 26, of Miami, the team pursuit alternate, will be added to the roster, subject to confirmation by the Seoul Olympic Organizing Committee.

“I’m extremely disappointed,” Hegg said in a statement released by the federation. “The level of caffeine that appeared in my system was just slightly above the legal limit. Because of the hot and humid conditions at the trials, I was dehydrated, and I think this may have affected the results.”
