While Comrade Sleeps, East German Defects

HANOVER, West Germany —
An East German soldier secretly put sleeping pills into a fellow soldier’s tea and, once the man was asleep, defected to West Germany, border police said Monday.
A spokesman said the 23-year-old border guard put the pills in his comrade’s tea and defected in uniform but unarmed by climbing border fortifications.
The incident took place Saturday near the West German border point of Helmstedt in Lower Saxony state, the spokesman said.
