CAMPAIGN ’88 : Recount in Delaware
Lt. Gov. S. B. Woo, who had conceded defeat in Delaware’s Democratic Senate primary, reversed himself and claimed victory Monday, saying state officials had discovered vote counting errors that changed the results of the election.
Paul T. Hart, administrative director of the Department of Elections for New Castle County, said a key-punch operator made a mistake, recording 28 votes as 2,828, thus giving Samuel Beard 2,800 more votes than he received.
The count initially gave Beard 22,418 and Woo 19,624 but the revised figures were Beard 20,133, Woo 20,221.
The winner of the primary will run against incumbent Republican Sen. William V. Roth Jr. in the November general election.
