A 10-year-old boy died Monday of injuries suffered over the weekend when he was riding a water scooter in Mission Bay and caught his neck on a rope towing a water skier.

The boy, Thomas M. Ready of Mission Beach, was injured shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday in crowded waters off Crown Point. He apparently did not see the rope when he rode between a boat and the skier it was towing.

Ready apparently was riding the Jet Ski in violation of a newly enacted state law that makes it illegal for anyone younger than 12 to operate a motorboat designed to carry only one person.

Results of the investigation into the accident will be turned over to the San Diego city attorney to determine whether anyone should be charged under the new law, a police spokesman said Tuesday.

According to Ben Benites, boating administrator for the California Department of Boating and Waterways in Sacramento, Ready’s death is the second fatality this year involving water scooters.
