Pasadena : Uses for Transit Funds
Over the last three years, Pasadena has amassed $600,000 in surplus transportations funds from Proposition A. Now the city is trying to figure out how to spend it.
A study commissioned by the city has identified five programs that could be funded with the money.
The programs include allowing Dial-a-Ride passengers to travel to areas outside the city, providing free rides to polling places on Election Day, starting a downtown shuttle bus system and increasing advertising for existing transportation services.
The city’s Transportation Commission is scheduled to begin discussing the alternatives within the next month.
The city receives about $1.3 million a year in Proposition A funds, which help pay for programs such as Dial-a-Ride. The funds, which are earmarked for transit improvements, were generated by a half-cent increase in sales tax approved by county voters in 1980.
