Household Hazardous Waste to Be Collected Sunday at Puente Hills

The Sanitation Districts of Los Angeles County, in cooperation with the County of Los Angeles, are holding a free Household Hazardous-Waste Roundup from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Puente Hills Landfill. A licensed hazardous-waste contractor will be there to accept and see to the appropriate disposal of the collected waste. None of the materials will be disposed of at the Puente Hills Landfill, which is a non-hazardous waste landfill site.

John Hunter, environmental protection specialist for the city of Santa Fe Springs, said that residents may want to inventory their household supplies and take to the roundup those items no longer wanted.

The hazardous products, preferably in their original, labeled containers, should be brought to the site in a box to avoid spillage and for ease in handling. Residents are warned not to mix separate products together. The roundup is limited to Los Angeles County residents and there is a five-gallon limit per automobile.

During this initial hazardous-waste roundup, paints, stains, varnishes and used motor oil will not be accepted. These items will be collected at some future roundup. Used motor oil may be taken to one of several area locations that regularly accept used motor oil. The Sanitation Districts’ household hazardous waste information line at 908-4287 can give residents the address of the nearest location for disposal of used motor oil.
