Local News in Brief : Council Votes to Rebuild Burned Pier

Share

The Redondo Beach City Council voted unanimously to rebuild the city’s fire-ravaged pier, although council members have not figured out how to pay for the work.

After a May 27 fire destroyed a large section of the horseshoe-shaped pier, some residents said it should not be rebuilt and a majority of the council members tentatively agreed to put the matter to a public vote.

But City Manger Timothy Casey said the council’s decision to proceed with plans for a new pier indicates that no such vote will take place.

About 150 people attended the council meeting, many wearing T-shirts that read, “Save the Pier.”

“A lot more burned down than glass, wood and steel,” one young man told the council amid applause. “A spirit burned down, and that has to be replaced.”

A smaller but vocal group wore tags that read “Take the Pier to the Polls.” They argued that the pier brings crime, litter and traffic to the city.
