Local News in Brief : Project Begins at Long Beach Port
With the dropping of giant boulders from a barge into the harbor, the Port of Long Beach “broke water” for a 147-acre landfill project scheduled to take four years.
The $150-million project will create four ship berths and space for two container terminals, port officials said.
To compensate for environmental damage at the landfill site, the project includes $10 million for improvements to a wildlife habitat down the coast in Anaheim Bay near Seal Beach, home of the endangered California least tern and clapper rail bird species.
“It’s the most significant event we’ve had in the port in a long time,” port Executive Director Joseph F. Prevratil said at the ceremony marking the start of the project.
