President Reagan’s choice of Lauro F. Cavazos of Texas to become the nation’s next secretary of education was approved by a Senate committee, clearing the way for expected easy confirmation by the full Senate. “I expect him to be confirmed unanimously,” said Sen. Phil Gramm (R-Tex.). “I would be very surprised if anybody voted against Larry.” The Labor and Human Resources Committee recommended unanimously that the Senate confirm Cavazos, who would become the first Latino ever to serve in a presidential Cabinet. A Senate vote was likely early next week, staff members said.
