Cyprus President George Vassiliou and Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Denktash began U.N.-mediated talks on the future of the island, which has been divided since Turkey captured nearly a third of it in a 1974 invasion. “Both leaders have declared their determination to proceed in a spirit of good will,” said Oscar Camilion, the U.N. secretary general’s special representative, after an hourlong meeting in Nicosia. Camilion said the two men agreed to keep their discussions confidential and will resume their talks today.
