CAMPAIGN ’88 : Beware: No Trespassing
The Pentagon said Thursday it had turned down as inappropriate requests from both presidential nominees to use military installations for campaign appearances.
“It has been very even-handed,” spokesman Dan Howard said. “I can tell you with my personal knowledge that I have myself turned down requests by both parties, on numerous occasions, to appear at military installations.”
A Dukakis campaign staff member said this week that the Naval Academy rejected a request to use the school Wednesday for a major speech on national defense by the Democratic nominee.
The Dukakis aide noted that Bush had appeared last week at the Army’s Longhorn Arsenal in Texas for the destruction of Pershing II rocket motors as part of a nuclear agreement with the Soviet Union.
Howard said Bush was invited in his capacity as vice president.
