San Diego State Loses First of Year in Soccer
Gavin Spaulding scored a goal with a bit more than four minutes remaining Friday to lead Nevada Las Vegas to a 1-0 victory over visiting San Diego State. The loss was the Aztecs’ first of the season.
The Aztecs (5-1) are ranked fourth in the nation in the Intercollegiate Soccer Assn. of America poll. UNLV is 2-2-1.
Jackie Mendez had 21 kills and Kim Washington added 15 kills to lead San Diego State to a 15-10, 12-15, 15-11, 12-15, 15-13 Big West Conference victory over Fresno State in Fresno.
San Diego State, ranked No. 6 in the country, improved to 7-2, 2-0 in conference play. Fresno State is 7-3, 0-1.
Steve Cokkinis scored to lead Point Loma Nazarene College to a 1-0 nonleague victory over Loyola Marymount. PLNC (4-0) held off Loyola despite playing a man short over the final 10 minutes of the match.
Bob Seymour of Del Mar defeated Val Zabrodsky of Sweden, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals of the USTA Senior Grasscourt Championships at Cedarhurst, N.Y. Seymour is the third seed in the 65-and-over division.
