A group in Lebanon holding three American professors and a colleague said it will consider freeing the four hostages if Washington declares support within a week for the Palestinian uprising in the Israeli-occupied lands. The declaration, similar to one released last Thursday, came in a handwritten, Arabic-language statement from Islamic Jihad for the Liberation of Palestine delivered to the news media in Beirut. It was accompanied by a photograph of the hostages: Alann Steen, 49; Jesse Turner, 41; Robert Polhill, 55, and Mithileshwar Singh, 60, a legal resident alien of the United States. The State Department, in response to Thursday’s statement, said it won’t negotiate with the kidnapers.
