Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Ozal said he might resign and leave politics if a referendum next Sunday on constitutional change goes against him. Ozal, 61, who has been prime minister since 1983, did not spell out what level of voting might bring about his resignation. He called the referendum to change a minor article of the constitution, bringing forward municipal elections by five months to November. Opposition parties have tried to turn the plebiscite into a vote of confidence in his leadership. Opinion polls show that about 27% favor Ozal’s proposed move, compared to about 65% against.
