The Seoul Games / Day 3 : Evans Gets Support From Placentia

Share

A grandmother’s pride came through the telephone line loud and clear. A call to the Placentia home of swimmer Janet Evans, who Monday in Seoul won the first U.S. gold medal, brought to the receiver Evan’s grandmother, Gladys Moore. She was happily fielding calls about her golden granddaughter.

“Of course I was watching,” Moore said. “I even had to do a little hollerin’, I don’t know if Janet heard it. She sure didn’t need it. She looked great.”

Moore said she was caring for Evans’ dog, Ming Toy, who showed signs of missing its owner.

Asked if she was taping the Olympics for the family, Moore gasped. “Oh no, I don’t even know how to work the darn thing. I suppose they’d want me to.”

Moore, who said she plans to watch every moment of the swim competition, will no doubt be able to give her granddaughter every detail, anyway.
