America and World Refugees
The Times cited 11 leading American population biologists who now assume that our planet’s human population will almost surely reach 8 billion (Sept. 4, Part I). Isn’t it puzzling that we talk so little about this basic facet of ourselves--our numbers as a species? With 1 billion more persons due by 1995, we seem to be going into extra innings in the real “world series.” Perhaps it’s time for a conference on the mound. Let’s all look at the scoreboard and call on the world leaders to put this issue on the agenda for the next economic summit.
