Pakistan Opposition Chief Benazir Bhutto Has Her First Child
Opposition leader Benazir Bhutto gave birth to a son today, her first child since her arranged marriage to a wealthy local businessman last year, her family announced.
It said the 7-pound baby was delivered by Caesarean section four to five weeks prematurely at 9:30 a.m. at a public hospital in the southern port of Karachi.
Hospital sources said that Bhutto, 35, the daughter of hanged Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, was admitted Tuesday night and that both mother and child were in good health.
Bhutto, who was educated at Harvard and Oxford, married Asef Ali Zardari on Dec. 18, 1987, in a union arranged by their two families according to Pakistani custom.
National Assembly elections are scheduled for Nov. 16 in which Bhutto’s opposition Pakistan People’s Party has a strong chance of victory.
