Share

Housing Secretary Samuel R. Pierce Jr. agreed to consider new federal low-income housing funds for Yonkers, N.Y., to help the embattled city comply with a federal court order to desegregate its housing. Yonkers Mayor Nicholas C. Wasicsko, emerging from an hourlong meeting with Pierce, said the secretary of housing and urban development agreed to set up a federal task force that would meet with Yonkers officials and a task force set up by New York Gov. Mario M. Cuomo. The mayor wants additional funds to build low-income housing in predominantly white, upper-middle-class neighborhoods in the state’s fourth-largest city to comply with a federal court order to integrate housing.
