West Hollywood : Gay-Lesbian Archives OKd
The City Council has approved a plan to temporarily house the International Gay and Lesbian Archives in the city-owned Werle Building.
Permanent space for the 40-year-old archives, now in storage, had been offered by four universities, including Stanford. But local activists have pushed to keep the collection accessible to West Hollywood residents.
“The archives are important for the gay and lesbian community and West Hollywood as a whole because they contain a rich history of this area,” said Jim Russell, a member of the city’s Gay and Lesbian Task Force.
The City Council also agreed to provide temporary office space in the Werle Building for the “No on 102” and “No on 96” campaign committees. Proposition 102 proposes to abolish confidential and anonymous AIDS testing for the HIV virus and Proposition 96 proposes to establish mandatory AIDS testing regulations.
The council voted to oppose both propositions on the November ballot.
