MIAMI — Hurricane Helene’s top winds intensified to 140 m.p.h. as it howled across the open Atlantic on Friday, and the National Hurricane Center here said it had deviated from the westerly course of Hurricane Gilbert, which last week cut a swath from Jamaica to Mexico.
Helene, curving onto a west-northwesterly track, was about 920 miles east-northeast of Barbados. It is not expected to approach land for at least three days.
