A high-speed passenger train crashed into a tractor-trailer rig at a railroad crossing in this Alpine town, killing the train’s engineer and injuring 42 passengers.

Friday’s accident was the first fatality involving the high-speed train, known as the TGV, since it was put into service in 1981.

The eight-car train with about 300 passengers traveling from Grenoble to Paris had slowed to 70 m.p.h. while approaching Voiron’s station when it plowed into the rig, which apparently stalled on the tracks, officials said.
