Distilling Attempt in Soviet Camp Kills 24

MOSCOW —
Soviet labor camp inmates trying to distill alcohol by heating paint started a blaze that killed 24 in Kazakhstan, the republic’s newspaper reported.
Kazakhstanskaya Pravda said officials refused to give details to its reporters for three weeks after the incident, which occurred Sept. 2 when inmates at a camp near Petropavlovsk broke into a paint storeroom.
