The superintendent of the new Mule Creek State Prison at Ione, Roger Schaufel, resigned under pressure and his chief deputy, Dennis Martel, was fired after an investigation by the state Department of Corrections that indicated management and other problems at the Amador County facility, which opened in June, 1987. A department spokeswoman said there had been allegations that inmates had been allowed to drink beer on prison grounds, and there had been a wide range of other concerns. George Ingle, assistant deputy director of the department’s institutions division, was named acting prison superintendent.
