The scene: Every celebrity in the Western Hemisphere seemed to turn out for “An Evening Under the Stars,” celebrating the first birthday of Ed Debevic’s restaurant in Beverly Hills and the sixth anniversary of the Starlight Foundation, which grants wishes to terminally and chronically ill children. Thirty kids mingled with celebs in the Fab ‘50s-style diner and at a parking lot party. Hosting was the TV producer with two first names, Danielle Alexandra of “My Two Dads.”

The buzz: Skeptics couldn’t believe that the 100 listed celebs would really show; party hosts often promise Elizabeth Taylor and deliver Angelyne. But the crowd cooed approvingly as it counted one star about every five feet.

Who was there: Goldie Hawn, Amy Irving, Dudley Moore, Ally Sheedy, Don Rickles, Pat Morita, Alan Thicke, Michael Keaton, Lea Thompson; Alan Rachins and Joanna Frank, Jimmy Smits and Corbin Bernsen of “L.A. Law”; Courtney Cox of “Family Ties”; Paul Reiser and Greg Evigan of “My Two Dads”; Melissa Manchester, Frankie Avalon, Jane and Jerry Weintraub; Melanie Mayron, Mel Harris and Timothy Busfield of “thirtysomething”; Peter Falk, Keith Carradine, Dean Stockwell, Pam Dawber, Steven Bauer; ice skaters Brian Boitano and Tai Babilonia and Randy Gardner; and teen dreams Rob Lowe, River Phoenix, Robert Downey Jr. (holding hands with Sarah Jessica Parker), Donovan Leitch, Scott Valentine and Corey Haim. And zillions of others.

Dress mode: “Black tie optional,” emphasis on the optional. Everything from jeans and T-shirts to peg-leg pants and motorcycle jackets, strapless gowns and jumpers. Sixteen-year-old girls were wrapped in Ace-bandage minis; the boys wore cowboy boots and pleated pants, baggy jackets, bolo ties and Ray-Bans.

The food: Miniburgers, hot dogs, brownies and Haagen-Dazs bars for the kids; Caesar salad, roast beef and pasta for the “adults.”

Entertainment: An Elvis impersonator and beehived singers belted out ‘50s tunes, but hardly anyone shook it on the dance floor.

Quoted: Patricia Wettig (with husband Ken Olin, the kvetching yuppies of “thirtysomething”) after meeting the kids: “This one girl said: ‘You know, with some of these stars, it’s better not to meet them in person. They’re just not the same.’ ”

I spy: Fun-guy film actor Steven Seagal (that’s say-GALL) of “Above the Law” spent much of the night with his arms folded across his chest, staring stonily ahead. Does he know how to have a good time or what?

Exit line: A party-goer venting his frustration at having to wait half an hour for his car: “They probably took it as a donation.”
