The director of the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, Jerry Partain, submitted a letter of resignation to Gov. George Deukmejian, effective Dec. 30. A Republican, Partain, who was appointed to the $85,391-a-year-post in March of 1983, said he hoped his retirement “will be a little more leisurely than the last few exciting years” when he has led state efforts to fight forest fires. A press spokesman for the governor, Tom Beermann, said “Jerry Partain’s leadership of the Department of Forestry, especially in the area of firefighting, has been a valuable asset to the state of California and will certainly will be missed.”
