Turkish Inflation Soars

Share

Turkey said its inflation soared to an annual rate of 81.8% in September, prompting calls by bankers for speedy action to bring it under control.

The State Statistics Institute said retail prices rose 4.8% last month, after an increase of 3.4% in August.

The annual rate, compared to 39.7% in September, 1987, is the highest since just after the 1980 army coup that crushed political violence triggered partly by economic woes and 101% inflation.
