A fire at a rural gun factory Friday killed four people, destroyed the building and forced firefighters to retreat as bullets whizzed by them, authorities said.

The bodies of four people were recovered from the rubble of the Buffalo Rock Shooters Supply, which makes ammunition and sells guns to police departments around the country, authorities said.

“It was a big ball of fire with a couple of explosions. There were a lot of bullets flying,” said Vince Dettore, fire chief of Naplate, a community about 4 miles east of the factory. The official cause was unknown, but fire investigators suspect a spark may have ignited gunpowder used to make bullets, he said. Ottawa is about 70 miles southwest of Chicago.
