Local News in Brief : State Funds Available to Fix Pier

Share

A bill signed into law last month in Sacramento will allow Redondo Beach to apply for $3.5 million from the state to repair the fire-ravaged Redondo Beach Pier and storm-damaged King Harbor, city officials said last week.

The law, authored by state Sen. William Campbell (R-Hacienda Heights), amends the state Natural Disaster Assistance Act and broadens the definition of “natural disaster” to include such man-caused disasters as the pier fire, City Manager Tim Casey said.

It is still uncertain whether the state will provide the funds and when they would be available, Casey said. The city applied for the funds last week.

Under the new law, the city could apply for about $2.4 million to rebuild the pier. It would be added to $1.1 million in state disaster funds the city is seeking for harbor repair.

Last winter, the Federal Emergency Management Agency approved $2.2 million or 75% of the money needed to repair King Harbor, Casey said. The agency rejected an application for funds to repair the pier.
