Science / Medicine : Cabrillo Museum Plans Tide Pool Explorations

Discover sea anemones, sea urchins and perhaps a small octopus in a series of tide pool explorations sponsored by the Cabrillo Marine Museum in San Pedro.

Naturalists will guide visitors in finding and identifying these fascinating tide pool animals on weekend outings during low tide, now through Dec. 4.

MEDICINE AND HEALTH

Genetic engineering, DNA fingerprinting and mapping of the human genome will be some of the subjects discussed in “Medicine in the 21st Century,” the opening lecture in Caltech’s 1988-89 Watson Lecture Series, at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Beckman Auditorium on campus. Call (818) 356-4652.

SCIENCE FOR KIDS

Many types of bears and their habitats will be the focus of “The Bear Facts!” the next “Whale’s Tales” family program at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County at 3:15 p.m. on Oct. 23 in the Ralph M. Parsons Discovery Center. Call (213) 744-3335.

ASTRONOMY

Mars is still prominent in the sky and in local planetariums this month. “The Mars Program” will be shown at the Charles Temple Observatory at Moorpark College on Friday at 8:30 p.m. Call (805) 378-1408.

At Los Angeles Valley College in Van Nuys, “Return to Mars” will be presented on Oct. 21 at 8 and 9:15 p.m. The star closest to Earth, the sun, will be the topic of the Los Angeles Valley College planetarium show on Friday, also at 8 and 9:15 p.m. Call (818) 781-1200, Ext. 335.

PALEONTOLOGY
