Daily Variety noted Wednesday that this fall’s box-office business is off some 20% vis-a-vis last year’s phenomenal fall numbers--a situation that cannot come as welcome news to film distributors. The fall of 1987 featured such unusual successes as Paramount’s “Fatal Attraction” and Vestron Pictures’ “Dirty Dancing.” Nevertheless--thanks to the presence of four $100-million-plus megahits like “Who Framed Roger Rabbit”--overall business for 1988 is projected to be nearly $200 million ahead of the all-time record box-office gross of 1987: $4.25 billion.
