Slain Officer’s Family Awarded $2.1 Million
A jury on Wednesday ordered the city of Dallas to pay $2.1 million to the family of a suburban police officer who was shot and killed by a Dallas officer who mistook him for an armed suspect during a joint drug raid.
Jurors deliberated for two days before awarding the money to the family of Addison officer Ronald Cox, who was shot by Dallas officer Darren K. Coleman during a Dec. 12, 1986, drug raid in a north Dallas apartment.
Attorneys for the city of Dallas said Cox was at least partially responsible for his own death because he violated procedures during the drug raid by failing to wear a bulletproof vest and neglecting to wear police identification.
