Local News in Brief : Bomb Plan Goes Awry, Police Say

Share

A man who intended to place a homemade pipe bomb in his former girlfriend’s car was seriously injured early Friday when the device exploded in his own car, Los Angeles police said.

After suffering injuries to his arms and chest in the 5:30 a.m. incident, Roger Dale Rush, 33, drove several blocks from the woman’s Highland Park home to a supermarket parking lot where he asked a passer-by to call paramedics, Lt. Don Beasley said.

Officers discovered a second homemade bomb in the car and the block around the York Boulevard supermarket was evacuated for three hours while the bomb squad disarmed the device, police said.

Rush was apparently trying to frighten the woman because “she doesn’t want to have anything to do with him,” Beasley said.

Rush was treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital and then taken to the jail ward at County-USC Medical Center, where he was listed in satisfactory condition. He was booked on suspicion of possessing an explosive device, Beasley said.
