TRW Inc. posted an 8% gain in third-quarter earnings to $68 million. Revenue for the Cleveland-based conglomerate was $1.65 billion, down 3% from the year-ago period. The company, which has defense, automotive, information services and energy products businesses, said it realized a net after-tax gain of $63 million from the sale of its TRW Reda Pump and TRW Oilwell Cable operations. That gain was partially offset by a charge of $43 million after taxes to cover the cost of a program to resolve claims from dealers and truck owners arising from the recall of certain integral steering gears for heavy-duty trucks.
