More than $2.8 million was paid for rare books and manuscripts from the collection of the late philanthropist Carrie Estelle Doheny during the first day of a two-day auction in New York City. A spokeswoman for Christie’s said all 337 lots from the Edward Laurence Doheny Memorial Library of St. John’s Seminary in Camarillo were sold. The items included a Bible with painted and inlaid binding, printed in 1680 in London. It was bought for $418,000--although the auction house had expected it to bring only $30,000 or $40,000. The two days of auctions were the second part of a five-part sale that will conclude in May. Proceeds from the sale will benefit the seminaries of the Los Angeles Roman Catholic Archdiocese.
