CAMPAIGN ’88 : Editorial Endorsements

United Press International

The Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times both endorsed George Bush for President in their Sunday editions, but with markedly different levels of enthusiasm. Two other big newspapers, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Atlanta Journal & Constitution, threw their support to Dukakis.

The Sun-Times enthusiastically endorsed the vice president, calling him “probably the most experienced candidate ever to run for President.” The Tribune, however, backed Bush reluctantly, saying he has run an “abysmal” campaign and picked a “lousy running mate.”

The Tribune did acknowledge Bush’s qualifications for the presidency, saying his “record of hard and honest work in public service is unmatched.”
