Demonstrators sprawled like corpses on the steps of the Cathedral of St. Joseph in Hartford, Conn., to protest Archbishop John F. Whealon’s opposition to state-sponsored TV ads promoting condoms to fight AIDS. A dozen protesters--one of them wearing a skull mask--acted out the role of dead AIDS victims on the steps, forcing parishioners to use a side door to enter the cathedral. Whealon recently criticized the ads because they promote the use of condoms to prevent acquired immune deficiency syndrome. He said that the ads should promote abstinence.
