Local News in Brief : Police Beat Her in Jail, Nurse Alleges

Share

A Santa Monica nurse Tuesday accused police personnel of beating her inside the Santa Monica City Jail and urged the City Council to take immediate action to stop what she called the “continuing problem of misconduct and brutality.”

Jacqueline Clark was accompanied by three other women who said they were also beaten by a jailer in separate incidents over the last two years. Three of the four have sued the city over the alleged incidents.

Clark, 47, who appeared at a press conference at City Hall, was also joined by David Lynn, coordinator of the Police Misconduct Lawyer’s Referral Service, who said his organization has received 16 complaints of police abuse by Santa Monica officers this year.

Clark, who said she had been arrested on a drunk-driving charge Dec. 9 when her alleged beating occurred, called for video cameras to be installed in Santa Monica jails and a citizens review board to be established to investigate complaints of misconduct.
