Local News in Brief : Supervisors Oppose AIDS Proposition

Share

A sharply divided Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to oppose Proposition 102, a measure on the November ballot that would require health officials to gather the names of everyone who has tested positive for the virus that leads to AIDS.

Chairman Deane Dana broke from fellow conservatives, Mike Antonovich and Pete Schabarum, to cast the deciding vote as he joined liberal Supervisors Ed Edelman and Kenneth Hahn in opposing the ballot initiative.

The county Commission on AIDS and Health Services Director Robert Gates had urged the board to reject Proposition 102. They said passage of the initiative would strongly discourage people from seeking tests for the human immunodeficiency virus or from participating in research.

Backers of the initiative say the measure is needed to combat the spread of the fatal disease.
