Share

Law enforcement officials were investigating an explosion that caused minor damage to an office building Tuesday night, police said.

Authorities said an “explosive device” was used to blow out a front window at Sunmac Benefits in the 600 block of Baker Street. Officials said that no one was inside when the explosion occurred and that no injuries were reported.

No other businesses in the office complex were damaged, police said.

The Sheriff’s Department bomb squad was called in to investigate the explosion, which was reported about 7:45 p.m. by an employee at the company, Costa Mesa Police Lt. Alan Kent said.

“There was some type of explosive device used. We don’t know what type or what magnitude the explosive power was,” said Battalion Chief Bill Raymer of the Costa Mesa Fire Department. “It appeared to be retaliation or a spite type of thing.”

Raymer said the extent of the damage appeared to be around $200 or $300.

A man who answered the telephone at the office Tuesday night refused to give any details about the business, but he said the incident was an act of vandalism.
