Former President Maria Estela Peron on Tuesday made a surprise visit to her homeland.

“I wanted to be in Argentina and here I am,” she told reporters at Ezeiza International Airport.

Peron’s arrival from Spain, where she has lived since 1981, comes at the beginning of what promises to be a bitter political campaign that will culminate in national elections next May.

Peron, 57, has stayed out of politics since she was overthrown in 1976 by the military and held under house arrest for five years. She succeeded her husband, Juan D. Peron, upon his death in 1974.

Lesio Romero, secretary of the Meatpackers Union, said, “The unexpected arrival of Mrs. Peron is very strange. We understand she was invited by the national government. I hope she doesn’t intend to involve herself with our (Peronist) movement.”

Peron’s visit is her third since Alfonsin was inaugurated as president in December, 1983.
