Malone Has 30 Points, Bailey Adds 25 as Jazz Surges Past Lakers, 107-97

Karl Malone scored 30 points and Thurl Bailey added 25 to lead the Utah Jazz to a 107-97 victory over the Lakers in an NBA exhibition Thursday night.

Utah used an 11-2 spurt to build a 50-33 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Jazz held off the Lakers, who came within 92-88 with 3:23 left in the game at Brigham Young University’s Marriott Center.

The Jazz went on an 8-2 streak, with Bailey getting a short jumper and a pair of free throws, to stifle the threat.

Utah converted 9 of 10 of free throws in the final 2 minutes.

John Stockton added 21 points for the Jazz, and Darrell Griffith had 14.

Magic Johnson led the Lakers with 21 points, and Byron Scott had 20 and James Worthy 15.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar was recovering from dental work Wednesday and did not play.

Utah was without Bob Hansen (broken hand) and Mike Brown (bruised thigh).

Utah is 5-2 in the preseason, and the Lakers are 4-4.
