Two limited partnerships controlled by Robert E. Zoellner have acquired a 7.2% stake in MSI Data Corp., a Costa Mesa manufacturer of portable data collection terminals, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Alpine Associates and ZH Associates, two New Jersey partnerships controlled by Zoellner, bought 381,400 MSI common shares for $7.2 million for “investment purposes,” the SEC filing stated. All but 136,400 shares were bought at prices below $20 per share, before MSI became involved in a takeover battle with Telxon, a rival company based in Akron, Ohio. In late September, Telxon made a $20-per-share tender offer for MSI. The company eventually agreed to be acquired by Symbol Technologies Inc. of Bohemia, N.Y., for $23 a share.
