California Voter Registration Increases to Record 14 Million

A record-high 14 million-plus Californians are eligible to vote at next Tuesday’s general election, including 1.4 million new potential voters, Secretary of State March Fong Eu announced Tuesday.

The Democratic Party gained 671,971 new registrants since the June primary election to edge the Republicans, who added 623,879 in the sign-up battle to expand party ranks. The decline-to-state category increased by 148,712.

“Voter registration figures have soared to an all-time high of 14,004,873, increasing a dramatic 1,467,666 registrants between the primary and general elections,” Eu said. “Of the 19,051,776 persons eligible to register and vote in California, 73.51% are now on the voter rolls.”

The previous record number of Californians eligible to go to the polls was 13,073,630 registrants for the 1984 November general election.

The Democrats have 7,052,368 (50.36%) registrants and the Republicans 5,406,127 (38.60%), according to the latest report.

Completing the list of voter registrants are “declined to state” with 1,256,227 (8.97%), American Independent Party with 163,685 (1.17%), Libertarians with 49,075 (.35%), Peace and Freedom Party with 47,890 (.34%), and the miscellaneous category with 29,501 (.21%).

Los Angeles County has a total of 3,767,094 registered voters, an increase of 350,903 from the primary election total of 3,416,191. There are 2,090,442 Democrats, up 189,050, and 1,314,490 Republicans, up 127,762.
