The first snowstorms of the season caused chaos on roads and railways and plunged thousands of businesses and homes into darkness in Sweden today.

Faulty power lines caused power cuts all over central Sweden, police said. Delays of up to 10 hours were to be expected on trains from northern Sweden. Weather officials forecast an easing of the snow, but promised overnight temperatures as low as 5 degrees.
